Editor’s Note: The following is a letter from Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) President Richard Coon to members announcing fundraisers for two Indiana Congressmen in the November election. Coon maintains that U.S. Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-Granger, and U.S. Rep. Mark Souder, R-Fort Wayne, had been “RV industry champions,” particularly during the series of congressional hearings concerning formaldehyde levels in trailers used for hurricane relief.
In the most challenging economic climate the RV industry has faced in decades, we are organizing two political fundraising events this month to support the November reelection of two outstanding members of Congress. I am seeking your support as an Honorary Host for these events.
Some may ask, “Why are we doing this?” There are two answers. First, it is important to support candidates sympathetic to our business interests. Our political system is designed to accommodate the diverse views and concerns of many interest groups across the country, including our own. We must be involved in the competition of ideas or each of us stands to lose.
Secondly, and more specific to the RV industry, Congressmen Joe Donnelly and Congressman Mark Souder have been RV industry champions. We know that government decisions on issues that affect recreation vehicles can have a decided impact on our business and the future success of our industry. It is critical we support those decision-makers who understand our concerns and who will be open-minded to our views.
These are two extraordinary members of Congress. Donnelly is a Democrat from Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District and a member of the Congressional Blue Dog Coalition, which supports a moderate agenda that includes fiscal discipline and strong national security. Donnelly serves on the following House committees – Financial Services, Agriculture and Veterans’ Affairs. Mark Souder is a well-known Republican from Indiana’s 3rd Congressional District and serves on the following House committees – Homeland Security, Oversight and Government Reform, and Education and Labor. Both have been strong advocates for RV interests.
These two events will serve to honor congressmen Donnelly and Souder and recognize them as champions of the RV industry. As an Honorary Host of each event, you will be able to personally meet each congressman and thank him for his dedication and support for our industry. We encourage you to serve as an Honorary Host at both events. The level of support to serve as an Honorary Host is a commitment to give or raise $1,000.00 per event. If you are not able to serve as an Honorary Host, we hope that you will mark your calendar and still plan to attend the events at the lower $500 individual event contribution amount.
The Souder event will be a lunch Oct. 20 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Elcona Country Club in Elkhart/Bristol. The Donnelly event will be a breakfast on Oct. 21 from 8-9:30 a.m. at the Elcona Country Club.
RVIA thanks you for your membership as we work through difficult industry, legislative and legal challenges. Please plan to join us helping to keep these two important members in Congress. We need to receive responses by Oct. 9 in order to form our Honorary Host Committee and send out invitations. You can respond to Dianne Farrell at [email protected]
