RV shipments to retailers totaled 17,800 units in the August survey of manufacturers, an increase of 31.8% over last month and 5.3% ahead of August one year ago, the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) reported today (Sept. 25).

This was the first year-over-year gain in shipments in nearly two years and the August monthly total represented a seasonally adjusted annual rate of nearly 210,000 units, the best in more than a year.

Towable shipments totaled 16,700 units, up 9.9% from August 2008’s 15,200, while motorized shipments totaled 1,100 units, down 35.3% from August 2008’s 1,700 total.

By segment shipments were as follows:

  • Travel trailers, 11,100, up 20.7%.
  • Fifth-wheels, 4,200, no change.
  • Folding camping trailers, 1,200, down 20%.
  • Truck campers, 200, off 33.3%
  • Class A motorhomes, 500, down 44.4%.
  • Class B motorhomes, 100, off 50%.
  • Class C motorhomes, 500, down 35.3%.

Year-to-date, all shipments total 104,000, down 47.1% from 2008.

Towable shipments year-to-date total 96,400, down 44.2%, while motorized shioments total 7,600, down 67.8%.
