The Outdoor Recreation Industry Roundtable (ORIR) sent letters to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Monday (Feb. 13) requesting that the nomination of Rep. Ryan Zinke for Secretary of Interior be taken up and approved as soon as possible.
According to a release, the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) and ORIR “strongly support the nomination of Rep. Zinke and believe the Department of the Interior needs active policy leadership as soon as possible.”
“Secretary-nominee Zinke understands the significance of the outdoor recreation economy and how to help our diverse industry sector reach its full potential,” explained RVIA President Frank Hugelmeyer. “We urge a speedy confirmation by the Senate so we can focus on expanding outdoor recreation jobs and providing high-quality experiences on our public lands for all Americans.”
As a lifelong outdoor enthusiast, hunter and angler, Rep. Zinke understands the importance of access to and funding for America’s public lands and waters, and the outdoor industry’s critical economic impact. Congressman Zinke was a co-sponsor of the RVIA-supported Outdoor Recreation Jobs and Economic Impact (REC) Act of 2016, which was recently signed into law.
The REC Act ensures that outdoor recreation spending and jobs are measured by the federal government and reported as a distinct part of the national Gross Domestic Product for the first time ever.
