Former Bearcat Corp. executive Don Cowan, 73, passed away Wednesday (Sept. 4) at his Syracuse, Ind., home.
Born June 4, 1946, in Louisville, Ky., to Cedric and Eva (LaShelle) Cowan, he was a graduate of Hanover College who served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and in 1967 married Cassie Wells, who survives.
Cowan purchased Bearcat, an industry supplier specializing in aluminum and steel structural parts for the RV and marine industries, in 1983. One of his sons, Jack Cowan, currently serves as president of the company after having stepped up with a couple of partners four years ago as his father coped with health issues. Son Jeff Cowan, in turn, also works in the RV industry, serving as national OEM sales manager for Airxcel Inc.’s Suburban OEM sales team.
Aside from his wife and sons Jeff (Kari) Cowan and Jack (Betsy) Cowan, both of Syracuse; Cowan is survived by grandchildren Jake, Sadie, Tate, and Davis.
Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, at Eastlund Funeral Home in Syracuse after which there will be a celebration of life officiated by Pastor Kent Butcher followed by military honors conducted by the Syracuse American Legion. Afterwards, friends and family will gather for a private party in honor of Cowan at the Huntington Street Bar & Grill in downtown Syracuse. Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warriors or Kosciusko Cancer Care Fund. Casual attire per Don’s request.
