Friends and numerous RV industry supporters of the Bashor Children’s Home raised a record $300,000 Thursday night (Sept. 7) during the 2nd Annual Bashor Children’s Home “Running with Spoons” Celebrity Chef fundraiser involving local business and industry chefs squaring off in a cooking competition at the Lerner Theater’s Crystal Ballroom in downtown Elkhart, Ind. Funds were raised through a combination of sponsorships, ticket sales and chef voting, reported Don Phillips, president and CEO of Bashor, a nonprofit child welfare agency affiliated with the United Methodist Church that serves troubled children and their families through residential care, day treatment/alternative education, foster care, and other services.
Micah Staley, general manager for Reflection and Imagine towables at Grand Design RV, Middlebury, Ind., and his wife, Naomi, were named the 2017 Golden Spoon winners at the end of the evening for their Asian salad during the event that drew more than 350 attendees.
“Last year’s event was historic,” said Phillips, whose organization works with as many as 150 children daily from 22 counties and three states and recently opened a Girls Intensive Treatment Shelter for young women experiencing severe trauma including victims of human trafficking. “This year’s event broke records, as it was the most ever raised at a Bashor event. The funds will enable us to fund our expanded efforts to effectively serve traumatized children.”
