Ernest (Sonny) F. Vaughan, 76, owner of Mountain Vista Campground in East Stroudsburg, Pa., passed away Monday (Aug. 6).

Vaughan and his wife, Eileen, moved to the East Stroudsburg area in 1981 where they purchased the Mountain Vista Campground and ran until the present time. Their son, Jason, is the vice president of the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association(PCOA).

Sonny Vaughan was a graduate of the Middletown High School class of 1954 where he was a multiple sport all-state athlete. He then entered the army and served during the Korean War. He then attended Syracuse University where he received his bachelor’s degree and was a member of the 1959 national championship football team.

While residing in the Highlands, N.J., area, Vaughan was a teacher for 13 years, then worked in the construction business and later in the hotel and restaurant business before entering the campground business. He also was a volunteer fireman for many years.

Survivors include his wife; his mother, Evelyn (Bailey) Vaughan of Umatilla, Fla.; four sons, Jason Vaughan and Joah Vaughan both of E. Stroudsburg, Ernie Vaughan and his wife Hope of Atlantic Highlands, N.J. and Kirk Vaughan and his wife Darlene of Little Egg Harbor, N.J.; a daughter, Sherry Shirley of Toms River, N.J.; six grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a sister, Lilian Shirley and her husband Jim of Umatilla; and close friend, Mary Turley of East Stroudsburg.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1039 Craigs Meadow Rd., E. Stroudsburg. Memorial donations or flowers can be sent to the church. The Pula & Bensing Funeral Home, 23 N. 9th. St., Stroudsburg is in charge of the arrangements.
