Spartan Motors Inc.’s second-quarter earnings tripled largely because of a 55% increase in sales of its diesel-pusher motorhome chassis to RV firms.
The Charlotte, Mich. company reported today (July 29) that it earned $2.3 million during the three months ended June 30, compared with $734,000 earned during the April-through-June portion of 2003.
The company’s total sales increased 42% during the second quarter to $78.2 million, which included the 55% gain in motorhome chassis revenue and a 36% increase in fire-truck chassis sales.
The second quarter of this year was the fifth consecutive quarter in which Spartan’s motorhome chassis sales increased, and more gains are expected because the firm recently was named the exclusive diesel-pusher chassis supplier for three Newmar Corp. models and six Fleetwood RV Group brands for model year 2005.
Production of the Newmar models began in June and production of the Fleetwood brands will begin in the middle of the third quarter.
As a result of the new business, Spartan will increase its motorhome chassis production rate by 60% beginning next week (Aug. 2-6).
“Spartan Chassis had a great quarter and we’re forecasting even stronger results in the back half of the year,” said John Sztykiel, president and CEO. “Momentum is on our side and we are focused on executing our growth plan.”
