Spartan Motors Inc. reports its second quarter earnings increased despite lower sales revenue due to the soft RV market.

However, higher sales volume of custom fire truck chassis, along with more efficient operations, resulted in the company’s profits growing, said John Sztykiel, president and COO.

Spartan’s second quarter earnings increased 28% to $1.3 million while its sales revenue slipped 8% to $58.5 million.

During the first half of this year, Spartan, a supplier of diesel pusher chassis to motorhome builders, earned $2.8 million, a 7% decline from the $3.0 million earned during the first half of 2000. The company’s first half sales declined 17% to $117.2 million.
Sztykiel believes the general economy is showing signs of improvement, although he believes near term market conditions will be challenging.
