Diesel pusher motorhome chassis supplier Spartan Motors Inc. reported improved earnings during the first quarter but the company’s president said the RV chassis sales outlook during the second quarter is uncertain.

“Our RV chassis sales remained strong during the (first) quarter, although we are seeing some signs of leveling off,” said John Sztykiel, president and COO. “While the RV industry continues to enjoy record sales, volatility in the financial markets could translate into lower sales during the second quarter.

“This year, the tightening may be greater as we deal with the combined effects of consumer uncertainty and the normal slowdown before (model year) changeover,” Sztykiel continued. “Yet, we do not expect lower RV sales than 1999, just less dramatic growth.”

Spartan’s earnings grew 36% during the first quarter to $2.0 million and its sales increased 12% to a record $84.6 million during the three months ended March 31.
