The Sprinter series of travel trailers and fifth-wheels has entered the Top 10 in terms of retail market share, according to the Keystone subsidiary of Thor Industries Inc., manufacturer of the brand.
The Sprinter brand ranked No. 9 during the first four months of this year with a 2.7% retail market share in the combined travel trailer/fifth-wheel category, said Don Clark, Sprinter brand manager, citing Statistical Surveys Inc. data.
During the first four months of 2001, Sprinter had only a 1.6% retail market share, so Sprinter’s retail market share has climbed 68.8% when the first four months of this year are compared with the same period a year earlier, Clark added.
One reason for Sprinter’s growth is that it “covers such a wide span of the travel trailer and fifth-wheel market” with travel trailer lengths ranging from 24 to 38 feet and fifth-wheels from 26 to 37 feet, Clark said.
When viewed from the perspective of brand names, the combined travel trailer/fifth-wheel market is fragmented. The leading brand is Coachmen, built by Coachmen Industries Inc., with a 4.6% retail market share during the first four months of this year, according to Statistical Surveys, an independent market research firm.
Tied for No. 2 is the Prowler brand by Fleetwood Enterprises Inc., and the Dutchmen Classic by Dutchmen Manufacturing, another Thor subsidiary. Both the Prowler and Dutchmen Classic had 4.1% retail market shares during the first four months of this year.
Meanwhile, R-Vision Inc.’s Trail Lite brand was No. 4 with a 3.8% retail market share and the Montana, another Keystone brand, was No. 5 with a 3.3% retail market share during the first four months of this year, according to Statistical Surveys.
