Editor’s Note: Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI) reported that data was delayed in six Canadian provinces for the May towable totals. May is the largest volume month in Canada and the delayed registrations resulted in significant decreases in the two-year comparisons. SSI estimated the national volume for May which is reflected in the monthly and yearly comparisons.

Year-over-year Canadian towable sales declined 12.6% in May and 6.36% for the first five months, according to the latest report from Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI).

Results by segment showed:

• Sales in the travel trailer sector fell 12.5% in May and 5.1% year-to-date.

• Canadian fifth-wheel sales declined 12.15% for the month and 11.15% through May.

• Folding camping trailer registrations fell 15.3% in May and 3.6% year-to-date.

• Canadian recreational park trailers were down 23.3% for the month and 30.1% for the five months.

Thor Industries Inc. was the overall Canadian towable sales leader through May with a 39% market share, followed by Forest River Inc. (32.5%) and Jayco Inc. (18.4%).

Thor was the leader in travel trailer sales for the five months, holding a 39.3% market share, while Forest River was No. 2 (31.3%), followed by Jayco (19.4%). Thor was also No. 1 in the Canadian fifth-wheel sales, capturing a 45.9% market share, with Forest River at No. 2 posting a 31.4% share, followed by Jayco (11.9%) and Grand Design RV Co. (6.5%).

Forest River led year-to-date Canadian folding camping trailer sales with a 61.2% market share while Jayco posted a 30.2% share. Thor led the park model sector for the quarter with a 50.7% market share while Forest River owned 19.4% of the market and General Coach 16.4%.
