August’s retail towable RV sales reports continue to point to an improvement in the market even though the total retail numbers still represent a significant downturn from last year, according to Tom Walworth, president of Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI).

August towable retails were down 20.7 % on a volume of 14,823 “RV trailers” from a total of 18,700 units in August of 2008.

Year-to-date towable retails of 112,289 units were down 30% from 160,455 units registered through the first eight months of last year.

The good news, Walworth points out, is in the comparison of last August to this August and in the progressive narrowing of the industry’s negative monthly retail trend.

“These are the best monthly two-year, percent of change numbers that the RV Industry has had in 2009,” said Walworth. “The monthly two-year percent of change for August found travel trailers off 17.6%, camping trailers off 23.3% and fifth-wheels down 27.1%. These all great signs that the RV industry continues to rebound from its slow start in early 2009.”
