The towable sector continued to outpace last year as retail registrations grew 6.8% for the first four months of 2018, again led by the travel trailer and fifth-wheel segments .
According to the latest report from Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI), results by category showed:
- Travel trailer sales climbed 6.7% for the four months.
- Fifth-wheel registrations rose 9.8% through April.
- Folding camping trailer sales dropped 17.6% for the four months.
- Park model RV sales edged up 6.1% through April.
Thor Industries Inc. was the towable sales leader for the four months with 47% share of the market, ahead of Forest River Inc. owning a 35.7% share and Grand Design RV Co. (5.9%).
By segment, Thor was No. 1 in travel trailers through April with a 46.6% market share, followed by Forest River (37.6%). Thor led fifth-wheel sales with a 52.6% market share, followed by Forest River (27.2%) and Grand Design (13.8%).
In folding camping trailers, Forest River led the category for the first four months with a 70.2% market share while Columbia Northwest/Aliner Inc. garnered 13% and Thor held a 9.3% share. Cavco Industries Inc. led the park model segment with a 23.5% market share, followed by Champion Home Builders (19.8%) and Kropf Industries Inc. (14.5%).
