Year-over-year towable retail registrations grew 5.4% in February and 11.8% for the first two months, according to the latest report from Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI). Travel trailers continue to drive the segment in 2017, logging another strong sales month in February.
Results by category showed:
- Sales for the travel trailer segment climbed 7.8% for the month and 15.3% year-to-date.
- Fifth-wheel registrations edged down 0.1% in February but gained 5.2% for the two months.
- Folding camping trailer sales fell 7.7% for the month and 5.2% through February.
- Park model RV sales dropped 21.6% in February and 37.8% for the two months.
Thor Industries Inc. was the towable sales leader through February with 47.6% share of the market, ahead of Forest River Inc. owning a 35.7% share and Grand Design RV Co. (4.7%). Reflecting the strength of the winter recreation industry in Minnesota, RV ice fish house builder American Surplus & Manufacturing ranked No. 4 with a 2.1% share.
By segment, Thor was No. 1 in travel trailers for the two months with a 47.4% market share, followed by Forest River with a 37.1% share. Thor led fifth-wheel sales with a 52.4% market share, ahead of Forest River (29.4%) and Grand Design RV Co. (11.2%).
In folding camping trailers, Forest River led the category through February with a 66% market share, followed by Columbia Northwest/Aliner Inc. (14.2%) and Thor (10.8%). Champion Home Builders led the park model segment with a 21.5% market share, ahead of Skyline Corp. (14%). Cavco Industries Inc. and Fleetwood Homes Inc. tied for the No. 3 slot, each gaining a 10.8% share.
