August motorized sales plummeted 51.7% in year-over-year comparisons as consumers continue to stay on the sidelines for discretionary purchases.
It marked the third straight month of declines over 50% for the sector.
According to data from Statistical Surveys Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich., overall August motorhome sales dropped to 1,892 units compared with 3,920 a year ago while year-to-date registrations retreated 36.8% to 22,077 units from 34,938.
Class A sales were down 54.1% in August with 1,059 units sold versus 2,309 the previous year as Class A diesel registrations declined 55% and Class A gas fell 53%. For the eight months, the Class A segment decreased 40.1% to 12,684 units compared from 21,161 in 2007.
The Class C market also suffered significant declines for the month, dropping 48.3% to 833 units from 1,611 the year prior. For the eight months, Class C registrations were down 31.8% to 9,393 units compared with 13,777 in 2007.
