All towable categories posted double-digit declines for June in year-over-year comparisons, spearheaded by a 20.3% drop in the high-volume travel trailer sector.
Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Statistical Surveys Inc. reported that overall June towable sales fell 18.4% to 26,294 units compared with 32,239 in 2007. For the six months, registrations fell 18% with 119,354 units sold versus 145,490 last year. June retail mirrored the wholesale sector, which showed a 27.4% decline in towable shipments from the previous year.
Travel trailer sales in June totaled 16,534 units sold compared with 20,738 in the previous year. Year-to-date, trailer registrations retreated 19.5% to 73,381 units compared with 91,173 in 2007.
Other highlights:
• June fifth-wheel sales declined 14% to 6,806 units from 7,917 a year ago while the sector was down 14.8% for the six months with 34,054 units sold compared with 39,959.
• Sales of folding camping trailers dropped 16.6% in June to 2,559 units from 3,067 the year prior and were down 16.7% for the six months with 9,992 units sold compared with 12,001.
• Recreational park trailer registrations fell 23.6% for the month with 395 units sold versus 517 in 2007 while year-to-date sales declined 21.6% to 1,927 units from 2,457.
