Year-over-year motorhome registrations edged down 4.2% in May while sales were up 2.1% for the first five months, according to the latest report from Statistical Surveys Inc.

Thor Industries Inc. ranked as the motorhome sales leader year-to-date with a 20.9% market share, followed by Winnebago Industries Inc. (19.7%) and Forest River Inc. subsidiary Coachmen RV (12.3%).

In the Class A category, registrations in May were up 6% compared with 2011 as year-to-date sales rose 3.5%. Winnebago led the category for the five months, posting a 21.3% market share, while Tiffin Motorhomes Inc. held a 21% share and Thor was No. 3 with a 17.2% share.

Class C sales fell 13.7% in May and were flat for the five months, up less than 1%. Thor led the category through May with a 25.3% market share, followed by Coachmen (19.7%) and Winnebago (17.9%).

Rental registrations, which were primarily Class C sales, fell 50% in May.
