Towable sales continued to keep pace with last year’s retail market, up 0.2% in May and 0.9% for the first five months, according to Statistical Surveys Inc.
The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based independent marketing firm reported that overall towable retail registrations totaled 28,991 units for the month compared with 28,940 a year ago. Year-to-date, 111,181 towable units were sold versus 110,221 last year.
The retail arena lagged behind the wholesale market in May, which saw a 40% surge in travel trailer shipments and a 20.5% increase in overall towable deliveries for the month, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).
May travel trailer sales rose 2.7% to 17,468 units from 17,006 in 2005 while registrations for the first five months were up 3.1% with 65,709 units sold compared to 63,706.
The fifth-wheel retail market dipped 3.4% for the month to 7,936 units sold from 8,219 the previous year. Year-to-date, fifth-wheel registrations fell 1.6% to 33,346 units versus 33,898 last year.
Folding camping trailer sales showed a 5.2% decrease from last year with 3,047 units sold compared with 3,213. For the first five months, the sector dropped 5% to 10,061 units sold units from 10,588.
