Bridgestone/Firestone has recalled 297,000 Steeltex Radial A/T tires that were original equipment on Ford Excursion SUVs.
The Steeltex tires “are not performing up to the company’s expectations,” according to a statement by Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire LLC.
Steeltex tires also are the target of a lawsuit by a California motorhome owner who alleges five Steeltex tires disintegrated on his RV because the tire maker used substandard materials to make the tires.
A California judge on Wednesday (Feb. 25) delayed until mid-March a decision on whether the lawsuit should become a class action on behalf of other owners.
The lawsuit seeks $1 billion in damages and the recall of Steeltex R4S, R4SII and A/T tires.
Bridgestone/Firestone in 2000 recalled 17 million Firestone Wilderness tires after more than 120 deaths were reported.
