Investors shrugged off big layoff announcements from Texas Instruments and Kodak on Tuesday, bidding up stock prices on the Nasdaq composite and Dow Jones Industrial Average.

The Nasdaq gained 14 points, or 0.7%, while the Dow climbed 58 points, or 0.6%, on Tuesday.
