The Nasdaq composite soared and the Dow Jones Industrial average posted strong gains Tuesday as bargain-hunting investors snapped up beaten-down shares, particularly in the technology sector.

The Nasdaq climbed 172 points, or 5.8%, on Tuesday, after falling to a new low for the year on Monday.

The Dow gained 164 points, or 1.6%, on Tuesday as certain retailers reported third quarter earnings in line with market analysts’ expectations.
