Australian-based Swagman Motorhome began producing the first of its new line of Class As, a 28-foot rear-diesel pusher RV2801 model, with plans to offer coaches from 25 to 31 feet in length.
Neil Ingram, Swagman’s managing director, said the company is forecasting first-year production of approximately 100 units and that pre-orders for the 28 series had exceeded expectation. “Over the past 12 months, we have built up a long list of buyers waiting for the model’s release,” Ingram said, including inquiries from China, South America, Europe, Dubai and North America. “Demand has certainly surpassed our production.”
According to Ingram, the company’s North American market plans are still on track, despite the turmoil in U.S. financial markets.
“Obviously, we are keeping an eye on the U.S. economy, but as we have received numerous inquiries from motorhome manufacturers and dealers, and we are keen to break into this (U.S.) lucrative market when the time is right,” he said. “We were always planning to look at the U.S. market in 2009 and, at this stage, we are still on track with this timeframe.”
The RV2801, as built for the U.S. market, will be priced at around $120,000.
All new Swagman models have a patented “Armourshell” one-piece carbon fiber/ Kevlar body construction, which the company said is lighter and eight times stronger than traditional constructions. The composite body and space frame chassis permit taking up 2 tons of weight out for increased fuel efficiency, according to Ingram.
The unit also uses a rear-mounted International Maxxforce5 V-6 diesel (Euro 5/ 2010 compliant for Australian emissions standards) and five-speed Allison transmission. Some additional comfort features include a six air-bag suspension and ABS for ride comfort, panoramic windshield and wrap-around dash, electrically operated leather seats and integrated full-color touch GPS. The units are also equipped with a reversing camera, elegant lounge and fully functional kitchen with pantry, queen-size bed and oversized wardrobe and uniquely designed bathroom with a full-sized shower, toilet, large mirror and vanity.
