The RV component of Tom Schaeffer’s Recreation & Fitness Center in Shoemakersville, Pa., will expand because the company is liquidating its outdoor-goods department, according to the Reading (Pa.) Eagle.
Schaeffer’s is leaving the outdoor goods business because Cabela’s, a hunting, fishing and outdoor gear-specialty retailer, will open its largest store nearby, said Kevin Rinehart, Schaeffer’s store manager.
“We’re looking to expand on the RV side (known as Tom Schaeffer’s RV Superstore), and the fitness side might absorb some of that (soon-to-be vacated outdoor-goods) area too,” Rinehart told the Eagle.
“We won’t be catering to the backpacker-type customer any longer,” Rinehart added. “The way we look at it is, Cabela’s is doing us a favor, these people (backpacker customers) still have a place to go.”
Tom Schaeffer’s RV Superstore will continue stocking outdoor supplies used by its RV customers, but it will no longer inventory high-end backpacks, sleeping bags and associated items. It will discontinue its bicycle business too, Rinehart said.
Cabela’s, which also has a major mail-order catalog and online retail business, currently operates eight stores in the region stretching from Nebraska to Michigan. The location planned for near Reading will be its first in the East.
Cabela’s stores attempt to be a destination for shoppers by blending entertainment with retailing, similar to the Bass Pro Shops group of stores.
