The retail sales of towable RVs were down sharply in May, when compared with May 2000, according to Statistical Surveys Inc., an independent market research firm.

Here is how the individual product categories performed:

Travel trailer sales fell 19.2% to 9,776 units retailed during May. After the first five months of this year, travel trailer retail sales were down 12% to 38,508 units, when compared with the same portion of 2000.

Fifth-wheel retail sales plunged 20.7% in May to 4,682 units. After the first five months of this year, fifth-wheel retail sales were down 10.8% to 20,410 units.

Folding camper retail sales fell 34.3% in May to 3,892 units. After the first five months of this year, folding camper retail sales were down 20.6% to 15,077 units.

Park model retail sales declined 28.7% in May to 403 units. After the first five months of this year, park model retail sales were down 23.1% to 1,821 units.
