A recreational vehicle transport company, anticipating another booming year for the industry, came a step closer Thursday (Jan. 8) to creating a new RV storage lot in Indiana’s Elkhart County, despite protests from neighbors.

The Elkhart Truth reported that a land rezoning request needed for the lot near Stone Lake, in Elkhart County’s northeast corner, won unanimous Elkhart County Plan Commission approval. The identify of the RV transport firm was not identified.

More than 50 people packed into the meeting room at the Elkhart County Public Services Building on Thursday, saying the project would cause a host of problems, including dangerous traffic on the lake’s narrow, winding roads; flooding concerns; and noise and light pollution.

But the commission, following a favorable recommendation from plan commission staff, voted 7-0 to recommend that county commissioners approve the rezoning, changing the zoning from agricultural to manufacturing. County commissioners will vote on the plan commission’s recommendation at their Feb. 16 meeting.
