Retail sales of travel trailers and fifth-wheels both grew at around 15% rates during June, although folding camper and park model sales declined, according to Statistical Surveys Inc., an independent market research firm.
A total of 17,757 travel trailers were sold in June by dealers in the 48 states from which Statistical Surveys was able to gather data, a 14.9% increase over the 15,450 retailed during June 2002.
Statistical Surveys was unable to gather data from New Hampshire in time for its report and it does not collect Hawaii’s numbers.
Thanks in part to the strong June, travel trailer retail sales were up 8.7% during the first half of this year to 70,435 units, compared with 64,816 units sold by dealers during the first half of 2002.
Travel trailer sales were up 11.7% during the second quarter, a sharp increase over the relatively sluggish 3.3% increase during the first quarter.
Meanwhile, fifth-wheel retail sales increased 15.3% in June to 8,201 units, compared wit 7,113 units sold during June 2002. After the first six months of this year, fifth-wheel sales were up 7.6% to 35,334 units, compared with 32,824 units retailed during the first half of last year.
Fifth-wheel retail sales increased 9.1% during the second quarter after increasing 5.3% during the first quarter.
However, folding camper retail sales declined 12.5% in June to 5,190 units, compared with 5,934 units retailed a year earlier. During the first half of this year, folding camper sales fell 16.8% to 18,450 units, compared with 22,181 units sold during the first half of 2002.
Retail sales of folding campers were down 15.2% during the second quarter, a slight improvement over the 20.2% decline that occurred during the first quarter.
Park model retail sales slipped 16.5% lower during June to 567 units, compared with 679 units sold during June 2002. During the first half of this year, park model sales were essentially flat, declining 0.7% to 2,649 units, compared with 2,668 units retailed during the first half of last year.
The 1,700 park models retailed during the second quarter exactly equaled the 1,700 units sold during the second quarter of 2002. During the first quarter of this year, park model retail sales declined 2%.
