Virtually everyone in the RV industry regards 2001 as a disappointing year and looks to 1999 as the industry’s most recent cyclical peak.
But a review of data from the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) shows that shipments of travel trailers and fifth-wheels in August and the first eight months of this year exceeded the comparable figures for 1999.
Additionally, travel-trailer and fifth-wheel shipments in August and the first eight months of this year exceeded the comparable portions of 2000, which were higher for travel trailers and fifth-wheels than they were 1999.
Here are the numbers:
• 13,000 travel trailers shipped from manufacturers to dealers in August, compared to 9,500 units in August 2000 and 9,400 units in August 1999.
• 90,600 travel trailers delivered to dealers in the first eight months of 2002, compared to 86,900 in the same period of 2000, and 82,300 in 1999.
• 6,000 fith-wheels shipped to dealers in August, compared to 5,300 in August 2000 and 5,000 in August 1999.
• 44,000 fifth-wheels shipped to dealers in the first eight months of 2002, the same number in 2000 and 40,300 in 1999.
Meanwhile, wholesale shipments of Class A and Class C motorhomes and folding campers have not reached 1999 levels.
There were 3,200 Class A’s shipped to dealers in August, compared with 3,000 in August 2000 and 3,900 in August 1999. In the first eight months of this year, 25,900 Class A’s were shipped to dealers, compared with 29,200 units in the first eight months of 2000 and 32,700 units shipped in 1999.
A total of 1,600 Class C units were delivered in August, the same number as in August 2000. There were 1,700 Class C’s delivered to dealers in August 1999.
In the first eight months of this year, 12,600 Class C’s were shipped to dealers, compared with 12,200 units in the first eight months of 2000 and 13,300 units in 1999.
In the folding-camper market, 3,800 units were delivered in August, compared with 4,400 units in August 2000 and 4,900 units in August 1999.
In the first eight months of this year, 33,100 folding campers were shipped, compared with 38,800 during the first eight months of 2000 and 43,300 units in the same period of 1999.
