Two Boulder, Colo.-area recreational vehicle firms filed for bankruptcy earlier this month: Lafayette-based EarthRoamer.Com LLC, which manufacturers four-wheel drive, all-weather “Xpedition Vehicles,” and Longmont-based Outfitter Manufacturing Inc., a maker of RV tops.

EarthRoamer filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy — which provides for liquidation — with liabilities of $6.8 million. The company also noted it had assets of $234,557 and more than 230 creditors, according to the court filing.

According to the Boulder Daily Camera, the company was founded in 2002 by Michele Connolly and Bill Swails, who modified Ford diesel trucks and Jeeps to create four-wheel, on- and off-road, vehicles topped with carbon-fiber reinforced campers. The company described its EarthRoamer XV-LT, which contained granite counters, a microwave and air conditioning, as a “luxury condo on the move.”

After making more than $640,000 in 2007, EarthRoamer had losses of nearly $830,000 and just more than $758,000 for 2008 and 2009, respectively.

Majority owner Connolly also has a pending bankruptcy case, which was filed on Sept. 9.

Nearly 100 of the creditors listed were for vehicle warranty claims of unknown values. The largest unsecured claim was a $5.3 million Small Business Administration loan guarantee. One of the larger claims listed was the company’s lease at the nearly 57,000-square-foot 1460 Overlook Drive property with a claim valued at nearly $390,000.

The company also leased space in Broomfield.

EarthRoamer officials could not be reached for comment.

Separately, on Oct. 8, Outfitter Manufacturing Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, noting liabilities between $1 million and $10 million. The manufacturer of pop-up tops for recreational vehicles has up to $50,000 in estimated assets, according to the filing.

Outfitter Manufacturing was founded in 2001 by a family whose history in the RV industry stretched back to 1959.

Brian Ward, the company’s president, filed for bankruptcy on Oct. 8 and minority shareholders Robert and Sara Ward filed for bankruptcy on Aug. 3, according to the filing. A man who said his name was Brian when answering Outfitter Manufacturing’s phone on Tuesday declined to comment.
