Not to be overlooked in the daily shuffle of industry news was the recent passing of Stephen W. Ball, 49, a veteran advertising executive who served the RV community in northern Indiana. Ball died June 19 at his home in Granger, Ind., a South Bend suburb.

Ball did copywriting for the B.J. Thompson, Ash Advertising and Boger Martin Fairchild agencies before starting his own advertising agency, Creative Network, in Granger, which served area industry for the past 10 years. The majority of his clients were in the RV industry for whom he handled advertising, public relations and helped them set up their displays at trade shows.

“Steve reached out to each and every one of us, challenging our awareness of the products and companies we served,” said longtime friend Mark Huggett, marketing director for ESCO, which is headquartered in Elkhart.

“His skills and college background proved to be the perfect ingredients for making us and our products look good. Marketing is about telling and selling a story — Steve made it look so easy. We nicknamed Steve, “The Word Man.” I remember calling him up just to brainstorm about products; he always made time and had the right word or phrase.

Ball is survived by his mother, Martha “Marty” Ball; sisters Cynthia A. (Brian) Hague and Julia (Tom) Lacy, and brother John V. (Jennifer) Ball Jr. His father, John V.Ball Sr., preceded him in death.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home in Elkhart where services were held on June 23.
